“Yo guys you need to hear me on this, this is real talk: right now, gloving is at that phase where its traditional ravers vs the new generation. This has been a heated battle that had been going on now. If the traditionals win, gloving will be over with, and everyone will move on with their life. If the new generation wins, it will set off in a new direction and evolving it into a new level. Its up to you guys to decide which is better for the community, which side has the better point.”
- Kevin Arcalas
He made a valid point. New gen is focusing on the advancement of moves and musicality and shows it through contests and tournaments. And it’s always about the love, but the respect is being lost nowadays. It’s an art, and I believe everyone wants to be the best artist.
I am a new gen glover.. I focus on the evolution.“
LittleRaverBoi’s reply:
“
This is my opinion on the matter:
I see absolutely NO room for ‘competition/battles/touraments’ in gloving. It’s a performance ART, not a skill that is simply executed. The truth is that it is FAR too subjective to say one person with one style is ‘better’ or ‘worse’ than another of relatively equal talent with a different style. It’s always gonna be one person’s opinion vs another. Moreover, the competition aspect tears down the love, unity, respect, peace, etc that we have fought to protect in the scene since day 1. I’ve heard so many people say that there can be competition but still keep it positive/helpful/loving in nature. While I agree it is POSSIBLE, let’s be serious for a minute…..that’s not what’s gonna happen. Every time competition gets into anything, whether it’s a game of volleyball with friends, a game of poker, video games, etc, someone will always get super competitive and overly-concerned about ‘winning’ and the false sense of self worth they feel they achieve by doing so, and it results in negativity/shit-talking/etc. Not saying it always happens, but it does and will. These things are NOT things we want in the scene.
Something similar happened to breakdancing years ago. Now look at it. If you ever see videos, it’s always about ‘OHHHH! SNAP! I just owned your ass!’ Now tell me that’s positive and helps the scene. I don’t believe it helps in the least. People always say to me that the ‘competition helps them grow to higher levels.’ I don’t believe you need competition to achieve high levels of talent. Look at poi artists like Nick Woolsey, Alien Jon, Zan Moore, etc. They were never in competition, but rather, showcased their abilities in an artistic way. They found their own motivation to get amazing at poi without any competition. I feel like people who are truly passionate about gloving can do the same. Sure, some do not have this inner motivation to do something simply because they love doing it, and will no doubt fall out of gloving. But the TRUE lovers of gloving will stick with it regardless.
Now, in the original post, you said that if the ‘traditionals win, gloving will be over with.’ My response to this is a simple one-worded question……’Why?’ Why does gloving have to end just because people aren’t being competitive about it? Doesn’t it still have that inner beauty it had for the past few years? If you can’t continue with gloving as a scene without competition, I think you need to assess your reasons for doing it in the first place. Do you do it because you get compliments from the ‘audience’ which is rewarding/makes you feel good? Do you do it because you like to feel like you are ‘better’ than others that glove? OR….do you do it because you genuinely love doing it and don’t care if anyone else even acknowledges it. I feel that my motivation for poi has always been because I love doing it. I don’t do it to show off, to be better than other people, etc. I do it because I love doing it and seeing how far I can push my abilities/talent. This is ‘self motivation.’ IMO, this is what glovers need to find to keep that aspect of the scene going fresh.
I see no reason why competition vs no competition would ever make the difference between something that has been active as hell in areas for the past several years to ‘die’ or to ‘excel into greatness.’ I still don’t see any reason for competition in this scene for ANY reason. That’s NOT what it is about! Enjoy the music, love what you do, and who cares if you think someone else is better than you so long as you love doing what you do! In a non-competitive scene, you can always just ask someone how to do a particular move and they will help you. With competition in play, they won’t want to share because it makes you a bigger threat. I hope that makes sense when you see the big picture.
I hope I’m not sounding like an asshole when I say all this….just very passionate about this.“
